ANZSOM New Zealand Conference 2022
14-15 October 2022, Dunedin NZ
ANZSOM-NZ (Te Oranga Mahi) had its annual conference on 14 and 15th October, in Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand. The decision to actually hold a conference was made quite late in the day as we were uncertain about the potential impact of COVID. So we had a busy time getting it organised in a short space of time, but everything came together nicely. We were very keen to have an in-person conference, and the great majority of delegates did come to Dunedin with only a few joining remotely. We were delighted that the Federal ANZSOM President Dominic Yong and his wife Kristen came to Dunedin.
The first day was for workplace visits. We had a great variety of visits, which were a gold mine, the University of Otago animal research facility, a factory that makes hand made shoes, and a factory that designs and makes industrial robots for place such as meat works. We were very pleased with all the visits. The second day is traditionally our conference day. We had a busy programme with a wide mix of speakers. We are fortunate to have the University of Otago based in Dunedin, and a number of speakers were from the university, as well as ANZSOM members speaking. At the end of the day was the conference dinner. We all had a great time with the diners in groups doing a quiz. Great fun.
There is a Maori proverb that says:
He aha te mea nui o te ao
What is the most important thing in the world?
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people
So it was for our conference. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and excitement in the room as people saw each other for the first time in 3 years and caught up and exchanged stories.
